Review from Gods of Music.com

Often, when we are listening to orchestral and chamber music, we are searching for new direction, yet our senses really do not want to stray from the familiar. As a result, we look for things that break the rules, but just a little. In this regard, the track called ‘Echoes of Innocence’ by Brad Sayles would best be described as twentieth century meets romantic. Utilizing intertwined melodies in the violin and cello, and later in the vocal lines, this piece would be at home in any college level program to demonstrate just what make good harmony and counterpoint. It captures quite a bit from the style of Aaron Copeland, while blending true romanticism and Schoenberg styled elements to create a poignant, lingering impression on the ear.

Mr. Sayles has studied his craft well, and as you will hear in this track, he knows how to score for the visual mediums of film and video. As an aside, be sure to go to Brad’s site (www.BradSayles.com) and check out the first movement of the ‘New England Journey’, In the Berkshires, on the sounds page. You will detect the Copeland influence in much of Brad’s work, yet I find that it seems to pay homage to the style, as opposed to reinterpreting it.

Anyway, as to the ‘Echoes of Innocence’ track, Brad has a real delicate ear when it comes to handling motion in the individual instruments. The slight little fugue that occurs at the 1:50 mark between the violin and cello seems to work extremely well. Both parts carry a message, and they are clear to the ear without clutter, and without stepping on each other.

I only have minor issues with this track, and they are in no way a reflection on the composition, or on the artist’s abilities. First, it strikes me that the piano track has a little too much reverb, when compared to the solo string parts. It seems to blend better with the full orchestra. Second, I think the use of ‘boy’ choir sound has been a bit overdone lately in way to many movies. It was a novel concept when John Williams did it in the score for ‘Poltergeist’, but I just feel that I may have heard this once too often. Bear in mind that I still feel that Mr. Sayles has handled the parts well.

If you want to get a test of a modern classical composer who knows the roots of music, and how to pay tribute to those roots, then be sure to check out this track, as well as his other music.
